update your HAIR COLOUR for winter

SUPER-LIGHT HIGHLIGHTS THAT LOOK PERFECT IN SUMMER
can highlight the wrong things in the winter—like an ashy, palid complexion. The same thing if your hair is too-dark...

Never fear, here's how winterize your hair colour:

If you're blonde, go more golden and less beige, and ask your colourist to weave both highlights and lowlights throughout your hair for a warmer look.

Light brunettes should consider deepening their hair to a warm chestnut colour; dark brunettes, a deep chocolate hue. For both, be sure to ask your colourist for a multidimensional look. If you want highlights, ask for face-framing balayage ones—these hand-painted pieces tend to look more natural on dark hair than do foil streaks.

Amp up red hair with a copper or deep auburn tone—anything but bluish or burgundy, which looks fake. Because red fades quickly, top the colour with a clear glaze to seal it.

Don't go more than two shades lighter or darker—dramatic shades can look severe against pale winter skin.

tips for A BADLY BEHAVED FRINGE

SOMETIME A FRINGE {OR BANGS} CAN HAVE A MIND OF IT'S OWN ~
here's how to get it back under control...

 1. Get ‘em while they’re wet. You have to blow dry your bangs straight out of the shower! It’s a must. The minute they start drying on their own, you’re no longer the boss. Dry them, then get dressed, then come back and finish your hair.

 2. Dry shampoo before your bangs get dirty. After you blow your hair out, or even if you’re an air-dryer, blast them with a little dry shampoo while they’re freshly clean. This way, the oils never even get a chance to come out and flatten or cause separation.

 3. If you blow dry, direct bangs the opposite way you want them to go first. Then blow them to your normal side. This keeps them from laying too flat on your forehead. If you like to wear them straight down, brush them to the left and to the right while blow drying, then blow and brush them straight down. That will help control any annoying cowlicks.

 4. Go easy on product. It’s best to stick to dry shampoo and maybe a little hairspray when dealing with bangs (unless you have really curly hair and you need a straightening product). The more product you use, the more product gets on your forehead and can often cause break-outs. Eek!

 5. Lightly flat iron a small top layer of your fringe for shine and smoothness. Don’t flat iron all of the hair because it can get stringy. Just doing the little bit on top allows your bangs to look full, but stay smooth.

hair trend: THE INDIE FRINGE

WHAT DISTINGUISHES ONE FRINGE FROM ANOTHER HAS A LOT TO DO WITH ATTITUDE...
and getting the perfect cut!

In 2012 there are several ways to wear your fringe and the Indie fringe is one of the big trends. Messy, scruffy even if you will, but in that devil-may-care way that looks like you’ve perpetually just rolled out of bed. It’s youthful, carefree with a grungy edge.

Here's how to wear and style the Indie Fringe...

* This style works best if your hair is straight, or a bit wavy.

* Slight waves can add to the tousle of the look, but anything more will require regular straightening, so only make the cut if you’re prepared to spend time styling it.

* The thicker the fringe the better. If your hair is thin consider that the fringe will have to be quite deep (i.e. start from far back on the crown) in order to achieve thickness.

* Don’t go for wispy layers – as with fringes generally in 2012, a blunt cut is best.

* Length-wise you want below the eyebrows or just sweeping the eyes. The rest of the hair can be bobbed or long – the key is just to keep it relatively straight but tousled.

* Use a texturising product to get that messy effect even on cleanly washed hair.

* For a styling variation messily curtain the hair from the centre sweeping out.

younger-looking HAIR tricks

GLEAMING, SHINY HAIR IS 'YOUTH-FULL',
so it's no surprise that dull, drab hair can age you!
Pollution, harsh chemicals, and heat styling can all turn hair ho-hum, but a few extra steps will ensure your hair shines...

• Start in the shower. Look for shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner with ingredients like olive oil, jojoba, and rice proteins. Alternate these with your regular formulas to prevent buildup. Be wary of clarifying shampoos; they can deprive hair of much-needed moisture and even strip the dye off color-treated hair. After you shampoo, apply a conditioner evenly through the ends and rinse thoroughly. If your hair is colour-treated, use a hair mask weekly to replenish moisture.

• Prep work. After towel-drying, apply either a glossing cream or shine serum with high levels of panthenol (provitamin B5). Glossing creams are lighter and have less silicone, so they're more appropriate for women with fine to medium hair. Use a shine serum if you have frizzy or coarse hair or unruly curls. (Avoid saltwater sprays; they tend to leave a matte finish.)

• Dry the right way. Place a round, natural-bristle brush under a section of hair. Start at the roots, and hold the dryer so the nozzle aims downward—never up against the shaft. Slide the brush down without twisting it, to seal the cuticle.

• Add a spritz. While your hair is still warm from the dryer, flip it upside down and mist the ends with a shine spray. This ensures you won't get too much product near the roots. If you need a touch-up during the day, spritz some shine spray on your hands and run them lightly through your hair.

top 5 HAIR TIPS by MONIQUE

MONIQUE @ MANA SHARE HER TOP TIPS FOR SHINY, HEALTHY HAIR...

1. Wash your hair twice using a good quality shampoo. The first wash is to rid the hair of dirt and grime, the second is to allow the shampoo's ingredients to penetrate the hair.

2. Squeeze the hair get rid of as much water, then condition from mid-lengths to ends. Comb conditioner through, leave for a few minutes and rinse with cool water.

3. Give your hair a 10-20 minute treatment once a week. If you can, sit in the sun as the heat will help the treatment work better.

4. Have your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to help prevent split ends. If you have short hair, every 4 weeks.

5. Eat well, it has a big impact on your hair. Include lots of fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil in your diet.

style school: TWISTED TENDRILS

LOVING THIS STYLE SEEN AT GUCCI'S FALL COLLECTION 2012...
and it's so easy to copy!

1. Using a curling iron, work your hair by sections trying to get soft curls. For lasting results, you can spray a bit of hair spray before curling it.

2. Grab one section of hair and twist it around until you get to the back of your head. Secure it with a pin. {Try different heights to start tidying up the hair to see what looks better.}

 3. Grab a section from the other side, trying to keep the same level on both sides. Twist it up and using a fancy pin or clip to hold both ends.

4. Finish up with a little spray....

... and you're ready to go!

autumn / winter trend: THE BUN

ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS ON THE AUTUMN / WINTER 2012 CATWALK WAS THE BUN...

If you want to feel ladylike, this is the perfect 'do for you. From loose, romantic buns (Dolce & Gabbana) and messy knots to chic chignons (Rochas) and glamorous twists, the fall/winter 2011-2012 season seems to be all about updos.  For a Chanel knot, start by parting your hair to the side and make a loose pony. Next, roll up and pin in place below the ear.

Old Hollywood was also spotted in the Badgley Mischka collection. In fact, the 1940s and 1950s, as well as classic films such as 'All About Eve' and 'The Women' were the designer's main sources of inspiration. Therefore, hairstyles followed the same note of classiness and drama, a deep side parting with hair twisted on both sides combined together at the back in a simple bun.

At Luca Luca and Carolina Herrera buns were sexy and refined. Absolutely adorable are the sophisticated looks that have a dressed and polished aspect. First, it was the circular bun with French pins placed into the sides at Luca Luca.

Then, it was the chic horizontal bun at Herrera with a sleek, low part and hair swept across the side of the face and folded back.

However you style your bun, it's the ultimate go-to glamour style for a quick hair fix.
