hair trend: THE INDIE FRINGE

WHAT DISTINGUISHES ONE FRINGE FROM ANOTHER HAS A LOT TO DO WITH ATTITUDE...
and getting the perfect cut!

In 2012 there are several ways to wear your fringe and the Indie fringe is one of the big trends. Messy, scruffy even if you will, but in that devil-may-care way that looks like you’ve perpetually just rolled out of bed. It’s youthful, carefree with a grungy edge.

Here's how to wear and style the Indie Fringe...

* This style works best if your hair is straight, or a bit wavy.

* Slight waves can add to the tousle of the look, but anything more will require regular straightening, so only make the cut if you’re prepared to spend time styling it.

* The thicker the fringe the better. If your hair is thin consider that the fringe will have to be quite deep (i.e. start from far back on the crown) in order to achieve thickness.

* Don’t go for wispy layers – as with fringes generally in 2012, a blunt cut is best.

* Length-wise you want below the eyebrows or just sweeping the eyes. The rest of the hair can be bobbed or long – the key is just to keep it relatively straight but tousled.

* Use a texturising product to get that messy effect even on cleanly washed hair.

* For a styling variation messily curtain the hair from the centre sweeping out.

style school: TWISTED TENDRILS

LOVING THIS STYLE SEEN AT GUCCI'S FALL COLLECTION 2012...
and it's so easy to copy!

1. Using a curling iron, work your hair by sections trying to get soft curls. For lasting results, you can spray a bit of hair spray before curling it.

2. Grab one section of hair and twist it around until you get to the back of your head. Secure it with a pin. {Try different heights to start tidying up the hair to see what looks better.}

 3. Grab a section from the other side, trying to keep the same level on both sides. Twist it up and using a fancy pin or clip to hold both ends.

4. Finish up with a little spray....

... and you're ready to go!

trend alert: THE LOOP

THIS STYLE {STRAIGHT FROM THE CATWALK} IS SO SIMPLE AND ELEGANT...
These low loops have been big at all the Fall Fashion Week shows ~ and although they may have appeared effortless, they were also pretty and polished—the definition of a good hairstyle.

TO DIY: Rake Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream through dampened hair (to tame frizz and smooth strands) and blow dry hair. Create a centre part, then scrape your hair into a low ponytail, only taking the tail halfway through the elastic, finishing it off with a piece of hair wrapped around the band. Finally tug on the outer edges of the loop, forming a triangular shape.

Gorgeous!

the perfect CUT FOR YOU

THINKING OF A NEW 'DO BUT NEED SOME IDEAS?
Choose your face-shape, then choose your perfect cut...

OVAL FACE: This classic face shape can pull off any look. Keeping this in mind, use your hairstyle to create an illusion of the perfect oval by balancing out the proportions.

HEART-SHAPED: The narrowing of the face can be balanced with the extra volume of a layered bob, which tends to flick out at chin level.

SQUARE FACE: Soften up edges with a style that breaks up the symmetry. Try playing with off-centre partings, graduated layers and big, soft curls.

ROUND FACE: Soft, feathery cuts will layers coming forward onto the face can look sexy and stylish... and can also slim down a fuller face.

LONG FACE: A fringe helps to disguise a long forehead, while a chin- or shoulder- length style manages to add volume and broadens the face.

style INSPIRATION

HEADBANDS ARE PERFECT LOW-MAINTENANCE WAY TO UPGRADE A STYLE...
they can even help correct a bad hair day ~
but sometimes they can look daggy ~ or even worse, give you a headache.

So here's a little headband help...
* Consider your face shape. If you have a small face and fine features, a big floral number is going to overwhelm you. Go for a simple, thin headband. If you have a full face and prominent features, choose a thicker band. It's all about proportion.

* Hairbands are like jeans: Stretch helps. Not only does elastic keep a smooth, sleek shape, it's also more comfortable.

* Stay far, far away from molded plastic. Even though they may look sleek and mod, you'll have a headache after a few hours.

* Treat headbands like jewellery. Once you start adding earrings, a necklace, a bracelet, and so on, it's a hot mess. Keep your other accessories to a minimum.

hair trend: MARC JACOBS 2012

THE TUCKED-UNDER PONY...
The ponytail-meets-bun look at Marc Jacobs created serious buzz at the 2012 collections!
To achieve it, sweep hair back high and off the face (no part necessary). Flip the ponytail forward and pin with a thin clip about two inches from the base. Then flip the ponytail back down toward the nape of the neck and secure with a second clip to create the new-look bump.

hair inspiration: THE NEW YEAR KNOT

THIS TOP KNOP IS PERFECT FOR NYE...
{we know it's a coupla weeks off, but practice makes perfect!}

The Tip: A top knot gets dressed up thanks to a feathered hair accessory. Pull hair into a high ponytail at the crown of the head. Separate the ponytail into two sections, twist them into a bun, secure with hair pins, and add a feather to the base.

The Tools: Brush, hair pins, hair elastic, feather clip

The Trick: Add more volume to your ‘do by teasing the two sections of your ponytail halfway down the length of each.

return of THE FRINGE

THE FRINGE IS BACK...
You may be asking if the fringe never really went away, and how has it changed in 2011?
The answer is, it hasn’t really. It’s still best worn thick, blunt, and long (sweeping the top of the eyes preferably). And it’s still best worn in one of the following ways: with a messy, neo-bohemian, grungy edge with an aura of ’60s sex-kitten nonchalance (think Francoise Hardy or Jane Birkin) straight and sleek; elegant but still natural.
Hair cuts to wear it with
The bob
When we talk about fringed bobs its easy to think of 1920s style cuts like the Louise Brooks. But not so in 2011; now the fringe is the perfect accompaniment to a longer bob (think Abbey Lee Kershaw, below). Again this can work perfectly for a sixties-inspired look,
or for a grungy messy look.
The short crop
A pixie crop is also perfect with a fringe in 2011, but a slightly different type of fringe. Rather than being cut separate to the rest of the hair, it should all be a continuous; the crop simply cut longer in front to create the effect of the fringe.
 Long hair
This rather goes without saying: bangs are perfect for hair shoulder length or longer, particularly when hair is naturally straight or with a slight wave.

day & night PONYTAILS

TWO SIMPLE TWISTS ON THE CLASSIC PONYTAIL...
For Day {above}...
To diy: Loosely tong your hair to give it some wave and movement. Gather it up into a low ponytail, leaving the front sections free, to frame your face. Once secured with a band, take a small section of the hair in the ponytail and wind it around the band, to conceal it. Pin the end of the hair with a bobby pin, pinning it behind the base of the ponytail.

... and Night {below}
To diy: Style your hair as if you were wearing it wavy and down (curling iron, hot rollers, night-before braid - your choice) then weave it in sections a few times and pull it back with a clear elastic ever so gently, by your shoulders. All your hair doesn't need to be completely in the ponytail holder, which helps give it that romantic vibe. If you want to go there, leave a section of hair beneath the ponytail out and slip a few hairpins in there in order to keep the section of hair and ponytail adjoined.

colour CHANGE

HAVING TROUBLE DECIDING WHETHER TO GO DARKER OR LIGHTER?
Here's some tips that will help you find the perfect shade...

GO BLONDE IF YOU...
Have lots of pink in your skin: A cool, baby blonde is gorgeous with rosy skin freshens the face yet prevents the skin from looking too flushed. Conversely, rosy skin (or even just a face full of bubble-gummy makeup) will clash with warm, brown hair.
Want to cut your hair short: When a short haircut is really hot, it's always on a blonde - this is probably partly due to highlights' ability to play up a style's shape.
Need a lift: Going blonde can adds brightness to your look—and your outlook.

GO BRUNETTE IF YOU...
Have very thin hair: Darker strands add dimension and the illusion of thickness to fine, airy hair. To add extra depth, colour the under-layers a slightly richer shade than the top.
Have an olive complexion: No skin tone is better suited to chocolaty strands. A rich brown will counteract your complexion's tendency toward sallowness, as well as make your eyes and teeth look whiter.
Can't deal with high-maintenance hair: Keeping up with lightened locks is costly and time-consuming, while going darker can require as few as two visits a year. Brunettes also have an easier time colouring at home because you're not removing pigment (as you must to go blonde) and don't have to worry about brassiness.

update your HAIR COLOUR

SUPER-LIGHT HIGHLIGHTS THAT LOOK PERFECT IN SUMMER
can highlight the wrong things in the winter—like an ashy, pallid complexion. The same thing if your hair is too-dark...
Never fear, here's how winterize your hair colour:
If you're blonde, go more golden and less beige, and ask your colourist to weave both highlights and lowlights throughout your hair for a warmer look.
Light brunettes should consider deepening their hair to a warm chestnut color; dark brunettes, a deep chocolate hue. For both, be sure to ask your colourist for a multidimensional look. If you want highlights, ask for face-framing balayage ones—these hand-painted pieces tend to look more natural on dark hair than do foil streaks.
Amp up red hair with a copper or deep auburn tone—anything but bluish or burgundy, which looks fake. Because red fades quickly, top the colour with a clear glaze to seal it.
Don't go more than two shades lighter or darker—dramatic shaes can look severe against pale winter skin.

short CHANGE

IF YOU'VE BEEN TOYING WITH THE IDEA OF CUTTING YOUR HAIR SHORT,
here’s a few things to consider before you go for the chop...
1. Think about it; sleep on it; and think about it some more - don’t ever let stress or a pushy hairdresser make you cut your hair when you’re not entirely sure about it.
2. Have a consultation with your hairdresser - that way there’s no risk, no pressure and no cost. Take a few pictures of your dream style and tell your hairdresser what you want from the new cut, like if you wish it to be low maintenance.
3. When you make the final decision, don’t look. When your hairdresser starts the big chop, ask to face away from the mirror - it will help you to stop freaking out.
4. Revel in your new sexy look - and if you think you’ve made a huge mistake, just keep reminding yourself that it will grow back, thicker and healthier.
