update your HAIR COLOUR for winter

SUPER-LIGHT HIGHLIGHTS THAT LOOK PERFECT IN SUMMER
can highlight the wrong things in the winter—like an ashy, palid complexion. The same thing if your hair is too-dark...

Never fear, here's how winterize your hair colour:

If you're blonde, go more golden and less beige, and ask your colourist to weave both highlights and lowlights throughout your hair for a warmer look.

Light brunettes should consider deepening their hair to a warm chestnut colour; dark brunettes, a deep chocolate hue. For both, be sure to ask your colourist for a multidimensional look. If you want highlights, ask for face-framing balayage ones—these hand-painted pieces tend to look more natural on dark hair than do foil streaks.

Amp up red hair with a copper or deep auburn tone—anything but bluish or burgundy, which looks fake. Because red fades quickly, top the colour with a clear glaze to seal it.

Don't go more than two shades lighter or darker—dramatic shades can look severe against pale winter skin.

tips for A BADLY BEHAVED FRINGE

SOMETIME A FRINGE {OR BANGS} CAN HAVE A MIND OF IT'S OWN ~
here's how to get it back under control...

 1. Get ‘em while they’re wet. You have to blow dry your bangs straight out of the shower! It’s a must. The minute they start drying on their own, you’re no longer the boss. Dry them, then get dressed, then come back and finish your hair.

 2. Dry shampoo before your bangs get dirty. After you blow your hair out, or even if you’re an air-dryer, blast them with a little dry shampoo while they’re freshly clean. This way, the oils never even get a chance to come out and flatten or cause separation.

 3. If you blow dry, direct bangs the opposite way you want them to go first. Then blow them to your normal side. This keeps them from laying too flat on your forehead. If you like to wear them straight down, brush them to the left and to the right while blow drying, then blow and brush them straight down. That will help control any annoying cowlicks.

 4. Go easy on product. It’s best to stick to dry shampoo and maybe a little hairspray when dealing with bangs (unless you have really curly hair and you need a straightening product). The more product you use, the more product gets on your forehead and can often cause break-outs. Eek!

 5. Lightly flat iron a small top layer of your fringe for shine and smoothness. Don’t flat iron all of the hair because it can get stringy. Just doing the little bit on top allows your bangs to look full, but stay smooth.

younger-looking HAIR tricks

GLEAMING, SHINY HAIR IS 'YOUTH-FULL',
so it's no surprise that dull, drab hair can age you!
Pollution, harsh chemicals, and heat styling can all turn hair ho-hum, but a few extra steps will ensure your hair shines...

• Start in the shower. Look for shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner with ingredients like olive oil, jojoba, and rice proteins. Alternate these with your regular formulas to prevent buildup. Be wary of clarifying shampoos; they can deprive hair of much-needed moisture and even strip the dye off color-treated hair. After you shampoo, apply a conditioner evenly through the ends and rinse thoroughly. If your hair is colour-treated, use a hair mask weekly to replenish moisture.

• Prep work. After towel-drying, apply either a glossing cream or shine serum with high levels of panthenol (provitamin B5). Glossing creams are lighter and have less silicone, so they're more appropriate for women with fine to medium hair. Use a shine serum if you have frizzy or coarse hair or unruly curls. (Avoid saltwater sprays; they tend to leave a matte finish.)

• Dry the right way. Place a round, natural-bristle brush under a section of hair. Start at the roots, and hold the dryer so the nozzle aims downward—never up against the shaft. Slide the brush down without twisting it, to seal the cuticle.

• Add a spritz. While your hair is still warm from the dryer, flip it upside down and mist the ends with a shine spray. This ensures you won't get too much product near the roots. If you need a touch-up during the day, spritz some shine spray on your hands and run them lightly through your hair.

top 5 HAIR TIPS by MONIQUE

MONIQUE @ MANA SHARE HER TOP TIPS FOR SHINY, HEALTHY HAIR...

2. Squeeze the hair get rid of as much water, then condition from mid-lengths to ends. Comb conditioner through, leave for a few minutes and rinse with cool water.

3. Give your hair a 10-20 minute treatment once a week. If you can, sit in the sun as the heat will help the treatment work better.

4. Have your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to help prevent split ends. If you have short hair, every 4 weeks.

1. Using a curling iron, work your hair by sections trying to get soft curls. For lasting results, you can spray a bit of hair spray before curling it.

2. Grab one section of hair and twist it around until you get to the back of your head. Secure it with a pin. {Try different heights to start tidying up the hair to see what looks better.}

 3. Grab a section from the other side, trying to keep the same level on both sides. Twist it up and using a fancy pin or clip to hold both ends.

4. Finish up with a little spray....

hair inspiration: ALEXA CHUNG

WE LOVE ALEXA ~ AND HER HAIR...
There are 3 key elements to creating Alexa’s look: colour, cut and simply styling, here's how to her look:

STEP ONE: COLOUR Alexa may have been one of the first A-List celebs to adopt the highly popular balayage look.
For a subtle look just like Alexa opt for a shade that is 2-3 shades lighter than your natural hair colour.

STEP TWO: CUT Want to nail Alexa’s style? Then it is time to cut your hair! Alexa’s signature chin length hair is accompanied by her trademark centre part and softly layered shaggy bob. The fringe accentuates her eyes and finishes the look perfectly. Ask your stylist to look at your face shape and structure to advise you on what length bob and fringe would best suit your personal features.

STEP THREE: STYLE Step 1. To recreate Alexa’s signature casually messy do wrap the middle lengths of your hair around a curling wand, ensuring you leave the ends free. Hold the hair around the wand for 5 seconds before releasing. Step 2. Continue this step with the rest of your hair, sectioning hair randomly and without any consistency regarding section thicknesses. Step 3. When you have lightly curled all of your hair (remember you are avoiding the roots and the ends) lightly run your fingers through your hair to mess up the finished look.
Step 4. Spray a light spritz of hairspray over your tresses to lock this style into place.

fashion week trend: THE WRAP PONYTAIL

ANOTHER EASY-TO-COPY TREND FROM FASHION WEEK ~
the 'wrap ponytail' which debuted at Tracey Reese's Fall 2012 show just recently...

Here are tips to recreate these ponies from the runway:

 1. Apply a root-boost spray and mousse, then rough-dry hair for tons of texture.

 2. Back-comb your roots to add lift and set with hairspray.

 3. Curl random sections with a small (1 3/4-inch) curling iron, leaving the ends straight. Mist lightly with dry shampoo to give hair a matte finish.

 4. Gather a small centre section and fasten at your nape into a low ponytail.

 5. Take the remaining hair and twist both sides back and fasten with hairpins into a low ponytail, wrapping the base of the pony with hair.

 6. Leave face-framing strands loose and tuck some behind your ears for a messy, touchable look.

Perfect for every day or for a special occasion, like a wedding!

time to TOUSLE

ANYONE CAN CURL HAIR, IT'S CREATING A MUSSED-UP, NO-FUSS, TOUSLED LOOK THAT THE TRICK...
Kevin Murphy, star stylist and creator of Kevin.Murphy hair products explains
how all hair types can ‘tousle’…

NATURALLY WAVY HAIRWash hair and sleep on it to create gentle waves and settle frizz. If you need extra lift the next morning, dab a volumiser onto the root area or a product designed to enhance wavy hair to the mid-lengths. Then take random chunks of hair near the face and wrap it around a curling iron to create different waves. Wind the hair away from your hairline so it falls on the face with height.

FINE, STRAIGHT HAIRApply a volumising mousse and blow-dry hair upside down to give volume, then toss hair back and apply an oil-free forming cream. Using small-sized hot rollers, wind hair around and under the roller. Remove rollers when they have completely cooled down. Don’t touch your hair until it’s cool, even if the curls seem poodle-like, they will relax. This process helps the style last, if you touch it too early it will become limp. To maintain curls, mist with a little aerosol spray.

COURSE, STRAIGHT HAIRThe best way to achieve waves for this hair type is to start with a layered cut, especially around the face. Apply a gel or mousse to wet hair and wind hair down and under regular size Velcro rollers. Allow hair to dry naturally for 15 minutes then blow-dry for five minutes. Leave to cool, then take out rollers to release bouncy curls. Use a hot iron curler to enhance tendrils around the face.

CURLY HAIRAfter washing, apply a straightening balm and blow-dry. Brush completely dry hair for five minutes to smooth and pin it back into a bun. Use bobby pins, as an elastic band will leave an indentation. This stretches the curl out and eliminates frizz. Leave hair as long as you can, the longer, the better. Finish by wrapping random sections around a curling iron to create a few well-defined waves.

hair MOVEMENT

INSIDER INFO...
Hair that has movement, and doesn't fall flat, makes you look younger because it creates the illusion
of high cheekbones and eyes that are awake.

Here's how to get 'movement' in your hair at home...
When hair is damp, flip your head upside down, spray a texturiser on palms, and rake fingers through roots, lifting hair away from your scalp as you blow-dry. When only your roots are dry, flip upright and you'll see instant volume. Then, as you dry the rest of your hair, stretch out strands with a nylon-bristle brush—follow through from root to tip, flicking ends upward to add subtle curve.

Extra tip: Blow-drying small sections of hair lets you extend strands more efficiently.

And Angelina Jolie is getting in on the chameleon action, too. tress stress FIX

"ONE OF THE MAJOR CAUSES OF BAD HAIR CONDITION IS STRESS,”
says nutritionist Maree Mitchell. “Stress can upset the balance of the skin’s secretions on the scalp and lead to dandruff. Try taking anti-depressant herbs such as Valerian and St John’s Wort to improve the state of your hair, and your mood,” she says.

“Oats are said to soothe the nervous system, so it’s a good idea to start your day with a bowl of porridge. In fact, breakfast is most important meal of the day for your hair. The energy levels in your follicles are at their lowest first thing in the morning, and you need energy to make hair protein cells,” says Mitchell. “This is why it’s not to good to go too long between meals. If you have breakfast at 8am, your follicles will by hungry by midday.”

Remember... feed your body, feed your hair!
